Today was a pretty basic washoku meal: lots of fish and rice in different forms. I usually don’t like the kind of soup that they served today, but it was nice today. Usually the rice balls are just one big sticky ball that you can’t really eat. Today they cut it up so you could actually eat it without breaking your jaw or esophagus. The white looking thing on the plate is just a fish paste cake. It’s pretty much a giant flattened fish stick without the breading. Supposedly the rice with tofu is a traditional dish made near the Chouanji temple in Sasayama. I’m not sure I buy that. It was good and all, but putting some fried tofu, carrots and fish into rice sounds more like the cook needed to get rid of some ingredients before they go bad. At least they chose canned mackerel and not pig offal.
