According to the “lunch time” newsletter:
“Kibinago (silver striped herring)” is a kind of herring. They have a silver stripe down their blue (or green) backs that resembles an “obi”. (An obi is the sash tied around a kimono) In the Kagoshima dialect, obi is called “kibi” hence the name “kibi-nago”. I’m not sure what “nago” means but it’s probably related to “ko” (child). Kagoshima is famous for kibinago sashimi.
Fascinating.
The fish were actually pretty good. They were fried in a sesame breading. Once you get past the fact that you’re just munching on a whole fish, it’s enjoyed.
The “scrambled chicken” was not that. It was like this dry stew of tiny pieces of chicken and a bunch of other stuff. Including, but not limited to: tofu, green beans, renkon, gobo, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots and carrots.
Unfortunately the lunch ladies decided today to be a day to bring back the smoky trash. I thought maybe they forgot about it since we hadn’t had it in a while. The smoky trash salad is back and it’s smokier and trashier than before.
