When I was in Korea, the only taste I really remember is burning with a hint of sesame. Probably because the lunch ladies want to avoid city-wide indigestion, today’s Korean menu was void of chili. I thank the lunch ladies for this, not because I didn’t want the spice, but because I didn’t have to hear a million “OMFG! THIS IS THE SPICIEST DISH EVER! SATAN’S ARMPITS ARE COOLER THAN THIS DISH! MY MOUTH IS BURNING TO THE POINT THAT MY BRAIN IS BEGINNING TO MELT AND LEAK OUT OF MY SKULL”. Well, the Japanese equivalent of this. In my experience, Japanese people in a group freak out whenever food has some spice. A lone Japanese person is fine, but as soon as you get them together, for some unknown reason the spice multiples and everyone becomes a critic.
Bibimbap is this Korean dish where you put some seasoned vegetables, some meat and chili paste on top of rice and mix it around. I think there are a bunch of different varieties, but in Japan it’s usually the same variety. I’m a fan.
The tteok rice cake soup was pretty good. Tteok is a Korean rice cake that is put in soup. It’s usually better when it’s not sitting in the soup for hours upon end, but you can’t really help that with school lunch.
Today was another affirmative action orange day. My iyokan was ok today. I managed to eat it without squirting the table with orange juice. The guy in front of me was not so lucky and made quite the mess.
