The kids all love donut day, as all kids should. The teachers also go crazy for their donut lunch. I’m the only one who is less than impressed. The donut itself is pretty good. It’s the normal bread roll fried and then coated in “kinako”, Japanese soybean dust. Kinako kind of tastes like peanut butter and is pretty healthy for you.
The problem with the donut is what they choose to put with it. This Chinese vegetable stew just doesn’t go with a sweet donut, at all. Not only are there quail eggs and squid, but it’s thickened with that generic thickening substance that makes it taste like a glob of mess. Then there was the salad, which had no flavour whatsoever. These all combined to make a slightly less than happy stomach. The donut is huge, it’s not just a little dessert. It’s considered the main part of the meal. Now I see why non-Americans can’t do the “pancakes as a meal” thing. I can understand maple syrup covering a mound of sweet pancakes served with sausage and hash browns can cause some stomachs to churn. But my stomach is used to pancakes. Bean donuts and squid? No.
Also, why is there a squirrel on the menu? And an apple. Neither of these things showed up in the menu. Fail.
