Well today was another interesting adventure into the realms of edibility. The fish I had a while back came back to haunt me. It decided to come in pairs this time though. The fish today looked extra scary and was extra oily to boot. I don’t know why they decide that frying a fish that makes Kate Moss look fat a good idea. Fish bones, I’ve learned, have extra soaking power to soak up all that frying oil its scales cannot. It’s just not good. The grilled fish is one thing, at least it might be healthy. I can see eating disgusting things for health reasons, but eating disgusting things soaked in oil I can’t stand for.
The soup was interesting as well. “Leftover soup” is made from the sediments left over after making sake (according to the dictionary). This makes this soup almost creamy but it has a very distinct sake smell. All of the classrooms smelled like those drunk men you see on the train late at night in Tokyo. Maybe the lunch ladies wanted the kids to get used to the smell of alcoholics early on in life. Besides the smell, it wasn’t a bad soup.
The salad was ok, but I think they put wasabi or mustard in it. Mizuna is called “potherb mustard” in English, but I didn’t think it would taste like mustard. The salad just had a sharp after bite of skank that I didn’t approve of.
All in all, it’s another success for the lunch ladies.
